The Muonionalusta is a meteorite which impacted in northern Scandinavia approximately one million years ago, is believed to be the oldest known meteorite – 4.5653 billion years. It marks the first occurrence of stishovite (an extremely hard, dense tetragonal form of silicon dioxide, which is quite rare on the Earth’s surface) in an iron meteorite.
Approximately forty pieces are known to exist on Earth today.
