This intricately detailed angelic 19th century (1865-1880) ‘Mother and Child’ statue was cast by none other than renown Victorian era Parisian sculptor, Raphael Verrebout – A commissioned artist by Pope Léon XIII for a series of highly influential art and architectural projects throughout European churches. Verrebout’s work was also listed within the Christian Iconography Identification Study released in 2014 by the Quebec Museum Corporation.

From the beginning of human history – The ‘Mother and Child’ have been objects of worship. The earliest known reference was the Mesopotamian King Nimrod who is said to have married his own mother Semiramis. After Nimrod’s untimely death, his mother-wife, propagated the survival of Nimrod as a spirit being. She claimed a full-grown evergreen tree sprang overnight from a dead tree stump, which symbolized the springing forth unto new life of the dead Nimrod. On each anniversary of his birth, she claimed, Nimrod would visit the evergreen tree and leave gifts upon it. December 25th was the birthday of Nimrod – And this is the origin of the Christmas tree….

Semiramis then became the Babylonian ‘Queen of Heaven,’ and Nimrod, under various names, became the ‘divine son of heaven.’ Through the generations, Nimrod became the ‘son of Baal the Sun-god’. In this Babylonish system, the ‘Mother and Child’ (Semiramis and Nimrod reborn), became chief objects of worship which spread over the world. The names varied in different countries and languages. In Egypt, it was Isis and Osiris. In Asia, Cybele and Deoius. In pagan Rome, Fortuna and Jupiter-puer. Even in Greece, China, Japan, Tibet is to be found the counterpart of the ‘Madonna’ long before the birth of Christ.
Thus, during the fourth and fifth centuries, when the pagans of the Roman world were accepting the new popular ‘Christianity’ by hundreds of thousands, carrying their old pagan customs and beliefs along with them, merely cloaking them with Christian-sounding names, the Madonna and ‘Mother and Child’ idea also became popularized, especially at Christmas time.

The ‘Mother’ Mary – Madonna – has been venerated since early Christianity, and is considered by millions to be the most meritorious saint of the religion. She is said to have miraculously appeared to believers many times over the centuries. The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches believe that Mary, as mother of Jesus, is the Theotokos (Mother of God). The Catholic Church holds distinctive Marian dogmas, namely her status as the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, and her Assumption into heaven. Mary also has the highest position in Islam among all women. She is mentioned in the Quran more often than in the Bible, where two of the longer chapters of the Quran are devoted to her and her family.
