Jonathan Ancient Artifacts Victorian Era Ghost Town Platter

This incredible find – A Victorian Era Semi-Porcelain Flow Blue Serving Platter by Staffordshire potters, Myott Son & Co. of England – Was found shattered yet complete in the Canadian Ghost Town ruins of Nitchequon.

Historically, there was a community of Cree inhabiting Nitchequon as well as some Naskapi residents. The Hudson Bay Company used Nitchequon as a stop and/or trading post along the fur-trader routes from 1816-1943. French-Canadian canoe voyageurs (brigades) would stop at Nitchequon to exchange furs for supplies. However, due to its remote location and the fact it was the Hudson’s Bay Company’s farthest trading post, it was not cost-effective for the Hudson’s Bay Company to continue running it. As a result, it was abandoned and most Cree residents moved to Mistissini.

The firm of Myott, Son & Co. Limited, operated for 93 years. Established in 1898, the factory traded to 1902 at the Alexander Pottery, Stoke-on-Trent, Wolfe Street (sometimes referred to as the Wolfe Street Pottery). Myott’s produced earthenware from three ovens, the company having been set-up with family funding by Ashley Myott, at the incredibly young age of nineteen, after the death of his boss Mountford. Thus making him the youngest independent potter of the period.

The 1949 fire at Myott Son & Co’s Alexander Pottery, Staffordshire witnessed the unfortunate destruction of valuable pattern books and records that deleted a veritable bible of information and design – Myott’s ‘art’ has since been shrouded by a lack of knowledge and understanding, and veiled with anonymity.

Flow blue (occasionally ‘flown blue’) is a style of white earthenware and porcelain, that originated in the Regency era, sometime in the 1820s, among the Staffordshire potters of England. The name is derived from the blue glaze that blurred or “flowed” during the firing process – The most desirable and sought-after shade is this vivid cobalt blue.

Semi-Porcelain: Contrary to the heavy thick ironstone of the 1830s-1870s period, earthenware that was much thinner, such as bone china and other porcelains.

This is a guaranteed conversation starter and the crown jewel of any collection. It’s an exciting investment that will only get better with age.
